Kumar Soma, M.Sc.
Laboratory manager
Kumar Somasundram is a laboratory manager at the Canadian Institute for Safety, Wellness & Performance (CISWP). He has expertise in the operation and maintenance of field and lab instrumentation and wearable sensors, signal processing of biophysical data, and statistical analyses. He is passionate about understanding the mechanisms of musculoskeletal disorders and creating strategies to reduce risk of injuries.
Prior to joining CISWP, Kumar was the director of Research & Ergonomics at SORD Academy. He delivered research-backed ergonomic workshops and consultations to help office workers overcome physical discomfort and cognitive stress. His previous research as a graduate student examined the mechanisms of involuntary finger movements during voluntary finger exertions in various wrist and finger postures. He also developed laboratory activities and taught undergraduate students how to use ergonomic assessment tools.
Kumar holds an M.Sc. in kinesiology (occupational biomechanics) and a B.Sc. in honours kinesiology from McMaster University.
